"Why People Don't Donate - And Why They Should" - A Note from the Ground by Pehla Akshar

Everyone says they care about underprivileged children.

But very few actually step forward to support their education.

Even people who know us well. Even those who believe in what we do. Even those who trust our values and our integrity.

And we understand why.

Why do people hesitate to donate?

1. "It’s not urgent" : Education doesn’t feel like an emergency. It’s slow, quiet, long-term. But that’s exactly why it needs your support.

2. "It’s the government’s job : "True—but the reality is, millions of children are still excluded from quality education. Can we afford to wait?

3. "My donation is too small to matter : "It’s not. ₹500 can provide a child a learning kit. ₹5,000 can support foundational education for a year. Every rupee counts.

4. "I'll do it later : "Most people mean to give. But giving needs action, not just intention.

5. "They must already have donors : "We don’t. Most grassroots NGOs are constantly struggling to stay afloat. We can’t build futures without your help.

6. Closeness Without Contribution : This one hurts: Even people who know you, believe in your work, and say “it’s amazing”—don’t give. Why?

  • They compartmentalize: You are their friend/family, not someone they donate to.

  • They delay: They think they'll do it someday.

  • They assume: Someone else will support you.

  • They avoid the discomfort: Giving reminds them of inequalities they prefer not to face.

7. "Not My Problem" Mindset : Many people view the education of the underprivileged as the government’s job. They may say: “Why should I fund someone else’s child? I pay my taxes.” This mindset ignores both the urgency and the human connection that NGOs try to build.

Why should you donate?

Because you already care. Because you're reading this. Because education is not a privilege—it’s a right. And right now, you hold the power to unlock it for a child.

What can your support do?

  • Give children from underserved families a real chance to learn, dream, and thrive.

  • Help them break cycles of poverty through education.

  • Give dignity to families who build our cities, clean our homes, and raise our children—but are forgotten when it comes to their own.

Their children are watching ours dream through a glass wall. Let’s open the door.
